10 cose che NON FACCIAMO mai in Italia

Ci sono alcune cose da evitare quando ti trovi in Italia, se vuoi sembrare un italiano vero, o un'italiana vera. O se vuoi evitare sguardi come questo, da parte delle altre persone.

There are some things to avoid when you're in Italy, if you want to seem like a true Italian man, or a true Italian woman. Or if you want to avoid looks like this from other people.

Ciao, io sono Francesco e sono un insegnante di italiano per stranieri. Quello di oggi è un video a contenuto decisamente culturale, perché ti presento dieci cose che noi italiani non facciamo mai, mai e poi mai! Cominciamo con la prima.

Hi, I'm Francesco and I'm an Italian teacher for foreigners. Today's video has decidedly cultural content, because I'm presenting ten things that we Italians never, ever do! Let's start with the first one.

1. Ordinare un espresso al bar. Difficilmente in un bar sentirai un italiano dire "vorrei un espresso, per favore." Noi ordiniamo semplicemente un caffè, perché è ovvio che si tratta di un espresso, siamo in Italia! Quindi in Italia è sufficiente ordinare un caffè. "Vorrei un caffè, per favore."

1. Ordering an espresso at a bar. You'll rarely hear an Italian at a bar say "I'd like an espresso, please." We simply order a caffè, because it's obvious it's an espresso—we're in Italy! So in Italy it's sufficient to order a caffè. "I'd like a coffee, please."

Potresti ordinare un caffè normale o un caffè liscio per comunicare al barista che non vuoi un caffè macchiato o corretto in altro modo. Ma caffè è sufficiente come parola per ricevere un espresso, ecco. Quindi un caffè, per favore. Se ordini un espresso, nessuno ti guarderà male, è assolutamente corretto, è semplicemente inusuale per un italiano.

You could order a caffè normale or a caffè liscio to communicate to the barista that you don't want a macchiato or coffee modified in some other way. But caffè is enough as a word to receive an espresso. So, a coffee, please. If you order an espresso, no one will look at you badly—it's absolutely correct, it's simply unusual for an Italian.

2. Consumare cibo o bevande in movimento. Difficilmente in Italia vedrai degli italiani con dei bicchieroni di caffè o italiani che mangiano mentre camminano. È una cosa che non siamo abituati a fare, noi preferiamo sederci e gustarci il cibo o la bevanda che abbiamo acquistato o preparato, ecco.

2. Consuming food or drinks on the go. You'll rarely see Italians in Italy with big cups of coffee or Italians eating while walking. It's something we're not used to doing—we prefer to sit down and enjoy the food or drink we've bought or prepared.

All'estero però molti italiani amano andare da Starbucks o comunque comprare cibo o bevande da consumare mentre camminano, ma in Italia è veramente difficile. Ci sono delle eccezioni, ovviamente, come il gelato. Amiamo gustarci il nostro gelato mentre camminiamo per la strada o cibo tipicamente da passeggio, come le arancine in Sicilia.

Abroad, however, many Italians love going to Starbucks or buying food or drinks to consume while walking, but in Italy it's really rare. There are exceptions, of course, like gelato. We love enjoying our gelato while walking down the street, or typical walking food, like arancine in Sicily.

E ci sono anche altre occasioni in cui è più normale invece consumare cibo o bevande camminando. Per esempio in occasione di fiere o eventi in cui ci sono bancarelle che offrono il cibo tipico di strada. Ma in generale, ecco, noi non mangiamo e non beviamo in movimento. No, ecco, a parte queste eccezioni.

And there are also other occasions when it's more normal to consume food or drinks while walking. For example, at fairs or events where there are stalls offering typical street food. But in general, we don't eat and we don't drink on the go. No, apart from these exceptions.

3. Tagliare gli spaghetti! Ma passiamo subito alla terza cosa da non fare assolutamente in Italia e questa è una cosa che forse non dovresti fare nemmeno a casa tua. È una cosa gravissima! Tagliare gli spaghetti! No, gli spaghetti non devono essere spezzati prima della cottura o tagliati dopo la cottura, quando sono nel piatto! No, no, no!

3. Cutting spaghetti! But let's move right on to the third thing you absolutely shouldn't do in Italy, and this is something you probably shouldn't do even at home. It's a very serious thing! Cutting spaghetti! No, spaghetti must not be broken before cooking or cut after cooking, when they're on the plate! No, no, no!

Soltanto le mamme con i bambini piccoli sono giustificate nel fare questa cosa, ma gli spaghetti non si tagliano mai! È un aspetto tradizionale importante nel consumo degli spaghetti in Italia e non ci piace assolutamente rompere questa regola. E poi arrotolare gli spaghetti intorno alla forchetta è un gesto più elegante.

Only mothers with small children are justified in doing this, but spaghetti should never be cut! It's an important traditional aspect of eating spaghetti in Italy and we absolutely don't like breaking this rule. And besides, twirling the spaghetti around the fork is a more elegant gesture.

Ecco, io non sono assolutamente elegante quando mangio gli spaghetti perché non riesco mai a dosare la quantità di spaghetti intorno alla forchetta e quindi mi ritrovo con tutti questi spaghetti in bocca e devo tagliarli con i denti e quindi gli spaghetti che restano mi cadono dalla bocca sul piatto. Non è una cosa elegante, per questo non ordino mai gli spaghetti quando sono con altre persone in un ristorante.

Now, I'm absolutely not elegant when I eat spaghetti because I can never judge the right amount of spaghetti around the fork and so I end up with all these spaghetti in my mouth and I have to bite them off and then the remaining spaghetti fall from my mouth onto the plate. It's not elegant, which is why I never order spaghetti when I'm with other people in a restaurant.

Quindi la tradizione dice che gli spaghetti vanno arrotolati intorno alla forchetta in modo elegante, non troppi spaghetti! Questa è una cosa importante da ricordarsi.

So tradition says that spaghetti should be twirled around the fork elegantly—not too much spaghetti! This is an important thing to remember.

4. Toccare la frutta e la verdura. Quarto aspetto importante, una cosa che in Italia non si fa mai è toccare la frutta e la verdura. No, è una cosa che non si fa. Al mercato la verdura e la frutta viene servita direttamente dalla persona che ci lavora. Al supermercato invece vengono messi a disposizione dei sacchetti e dei guanti, quindi dovremo toccare o prendere la frutta e la verdura con il guanto e inserire tutto nel sacchetto.

4. Touching fruits and vegetables. Fourth important point: something you never do in Italy is touch fruits and vegetables. No, it's just not done. At the market, vegetables and fruit are served directly by the person who works there. At the supermarket, bags and gloves are provided, so you have to touch or pick up the fruit and vegetables with a glove and put everything in the bag.

Questa è una cosa importantissima perché se tocchi la frutta e la verdura in un supermercato e in un mercato molto probabilmente sarai ripreso o ripresa, qualcuno verrà lì a dirti non si fa, non si tocca. È una questione di igiene perché toccandole si rischia di lasciare batteri o residui di creme o di oli sulla frutta e la verdura che rischiano quindi di marcire più velocemente. È una questione di igiene e serve a preservare anche la qualità della frutta e della verdura.

This is very important because if you touch the fruit and vegetables in a supermarket or at a market, you'll most likely be scolded—someone will come over to tell you "you don't do that, don't touch." It's a matter of hygiene because by touching them you risk leaving bacteria or cream or oil residue on the fruit and vegetables, which then risk spoiling more quickly. It's a matter of hygiene and it also serves to preserve the quality of the fruit and vegetables.

5. Dare del tu a tutti. Quinto aspetto importante, dare del tu a tutti. Anche questa è una cosa da evitare ma è una cosa molto comune da parte di turisti che studiano l'italiano e non è una questione di maleducazione, assolutamente, ma è una scarsa consapevolezza e padronanza della forma di cortesia.

5. Using "tu" with everyone. Fifth important point: using the informal "tu" with everyone. This is also something to avoid, but it's very common among tourists who study Italian, and it's not a matter of rudeness at all—it's a lack of awareness and command of the formal register.

Ovviamente la persona capirà che sei straniero o straniera quindi nessuno ti guarderà male o sarà offeso, ma ecco in italiano la forma di cortesia è molto molto importante quando parliamo con persone che non conosciamo, in un negozio, in un ristorante, in un bar e così via. Quindi mi capita spesso di sentire turisti che parlano italiano e che dicono "ciao" o "scusa, vorrei un espresso." Ecco, in italiano preferiamo invece formule come "buongiorno" o "buonasera" in base al momento della giornata o "scusi" al posto di "scusa" nella forma di cortesia. Ma ho fatto un video con Giulia sulla forma di cortesia e lo trovi qui!

Obviously the person will understand that you're a foreigner, so no one will look at you badly or be offended, but in Italian the formal register is very, very important when we speak with people we don't know—in a shop, in a restaurant, in a bar, and so on. So I often hear tourists who speak Italian saying "ciao" or "scusa, I'd like an espresso." In Italian, we prefer formulas like "buongiorno" or "buonasera" depending on the time of day, or "scusi" instead of "scusa" in the formal register. 6. Pasteggiare con un cocktail. Sesto punto importantissimo! Una cosa che non facciamo mai o quasi mai in Italia è pasteggiare con un cocktail o con una bevanda molto alcolica. Pasteggiare significa consumare un pasto come il pranzo o la cena. Mi è capitato di trovarmi a cena con persone che pasteggiavano con uno spritz, ma è molto raro. Generalmente preferiamo birra o vino, ma mai un cocktail o una bevanda altamente alcolica.

6. Having a cocktail with a meal. Sixth very important point! Something we never or almost never do in Italy is have a cocktail or a very alcoholic drink with a meal. "Pasteggiare" means to have a meal like lunch or dinner. I've happened to be at dinner with people who were drinking a spritz with their meal, but it's very rare. We generally prefer beer or wine, but never a cocktail or a highly alcoholic drink.

Lo spritz comincia a essere più accettato dalla mia esperienza, ma tuttavia non è un reato consumare un cocktail. Se a te piace, ordinalo pure! Si sta diffondendo tuttavia, secondo me, l'usanza di pasteggiare con dei cocktail, soprattutto in locali che propongono dei cocktail che si abbinano bene con i vari cibi presenti nel menu. Ma in generale noi preferiamo birra o vino, ecco, se vogliamo bere qualcosa di alcolico.

The spritz is starting to be more accepted in my experience, but nevertheless it's not a crime to have a cocktail. If you like it, go ahead and order one! The custom of having cocktails with meals is spreading, however, in my opinion, especially in places that offer cocktails that pair well with the various dishes on the menu. But in general we prefer beer or wine if we want to drink something alcoholic.

7. Il cappuccino dopo le undici. Settima cosa che noi italiani non facciamo mai e questo è un classico, è un classico e sicuramente la conosci. Il cappuccino dopo le undici più o meno di mattina. Ecco, difficilmente gli italiani consumano un cappuccino dopo le dieci e mezza, undici di mattina. È qualcosa che preferiamo consumare in occasione della colazione, quindi prima di quest'ora.

7. Cappuccino after eleven. Seventh thing that we Italians never do, and this is a classic—it's a classic and you surely know it. Cappuccino after about eleven in the morning. Italians rarely have a cappuccino after ten-thirty, eleven in the morning. It's something we prefer to have at breakfast, so before this time.

Anche in questo caso non c'è niente di male se ordini un cappuccino dopo pranzo o alle quattro del pomeriggio. Noi italiani siamo abituati a questa usanza dei turisti stranieri a consumare il cappuccino a qualsiasi ora, quindi ormai è una cosa normale vedere uno straniero che consuma un cappuccino anche di sera e quindi nessuno ti guarderà male. Quindi tranquillo o tranquilla puoi ordinare un cappuccino quando vuoi. È semplicemente una cosa che noi italiani generalmente non facciamo, anche se qualche volta io l'ho fatto. Non è una regola ferrea da seguire per tutti, ecco.

In this case too, there's nothing wrong if you order a cappuccino after lunch or at four in the afternoon. We Italians are used to this habit of foreign tourists having cappuccino at any hour, so by now it's normal to see a foreigner having a cappuccino even in the evening, and so no one will look at you badly. So don't worry—you can order a cappuccino whenever you want. It's simply something that we Italians generally don't do, even though I've done it sometimes. It's not an iron rule that everyone must follow.

8. Chiedere modifiche ai piatti. Numero otto, chiedere delle modifiche ai piatti presenti nel menù. Generalmente al ristorante noi italiani ordiniamo esattamente quello che vediamo sul menù, quindi difficilmente ordineremmo gli spaghetti alle vongole con poche vongole o un risotto con i funghi con molti funghi. No, quello che c'è sul menù lo ordiniamo.

8. Asking for modifications to dishes. Number eight: asking for modifications to dishes on the menu. Generally at restaurants, we Italians order exactly what we see on the menu, so we would rarely order spaghetti alle vongole with fewer clams or mushroom risotto with extra mushrooms. No, we order what's on the menu.

Un'eccezione invece importantissima è la pizza. Ormai anche a noi italiani piace tantissimo chiedere un sacco di modifiche alle pizze che ordiniamo. Abbiamo dei menù con decine e decine di pizze, ma non troviamo mai una pizza che ci soddisfi e quindi chiediamo sempre un'aggiunta. Quindi aggiungiamo i funghi, la rucola, il prosciutto oppure togliamo un ingrediente da una pizza presente nel menù. Eh, lo facciamo, ma generalmente per gli altri piatti non chiediamo modifiche.

A very important exception, however, is pizza. By now even we Italians love to ask for lots of modifications to the pizzas we order. We have menus with dozens and dozens of pizzas, but we never find a pizza that satisfies us, so we always ask for an addition. So we add mushrooms, arugula, prosciutto, or we remove an ingredient from a pizza on the menu. Yes, we do it, but generally for other dishes we don't ask for modifications.

Su alcune tipologie di piatti siamo particolarmente intransigenti, severi. Per esempio, se ti piace la carne e ordini una fiorentina, ti arriverà una fiorentina cotta al sangue. Se preferisci mangiare una fiorentina ben cotta, potrebbero fare delle storie e alcuni ristoranti potrebbero rifiutarsi di portartela perché ne va della qualità anche del cibo. Ecco, rischierebbe di perdere la faccia un ristorante che serve una fiorentina dura perché è troppo cotta.

On some types of dishes we're particularly uncompromising, strict. For example, if you like meat and you order a fiorentina, you'll get a fiorentina cooked rare. If you prefer to eat a well-done fiorentina, they might make a fuss and some restaurants might refuse to bring it to you because the quality of the food is at stake. A restaurant that serves a tough fiorentina because it's overcooked would risk losing face.

In altri casi invece la tradizione vuole che gli ingredienti siano quelli e quindi non si cambia. La ricetta è quella. Punto. Ma sulla pizza puoi fare tutte le modifiche che vuoi anche se so per certo che i pizzaioli non sono per niente felici di questo perché devono sempre controllare le modifiche alle pizze nelle ordinazioni che ricevono.

In other cases, tradition dictates that the ingredients are those and so they don't change. That's the recipe. Period. But with pizza you can make all the modifications you want, even though I know for certain that pizza makers are not at all happy about this because they always have to check the modifications to the pizzas in the orders they receive.

9. Gesticolare eccessivamente. Punto numero 9. Gesticolare eccessivamente. Ecco questo non è una cosa che tu probabilmente faresti in Italia ma vorrei spiegare e un po' rompere questo stereotipo italiano. È vero che noi italiani gesticoliamo più rispetto agli abitanti di altri paesi. Sì, gesticoliamo, parliamo con le mani ma non come nello stereotipo che è diffuso all'estero.

9. Gesticulating excessively. Point number 9. Gesticulating excessively. This isn't something you would probably do in Italy, but I wanted to explain and somewhat break this Italian stereotype. It's true that we Italians gesticulate more than inhabitants of other countries. Yes, we gesticulate, we talk with our hands, but not like in the stereotype that's widespread abroad.

Noi non parliamo così e non ci muoviamo così. "Ho fame! Andiamo a mangiare!" No, no, non vedi un italiano veramente fare così? Se lo fa è per fare ironia. Gesticoliamo ma non così tanto. Ecco quindi ecco questa è una cosa che noi non facciamo, almeno quasi tutti.

We don't talk like this and we don't move like this. "I'm hungry! Let's go eat!" No, no, you don't really see an Italian do that? If they do it, it's to be ironic. We gesticulate but not that much. So this is something we don't do, at least almost all of us.

10. Ordinare l'acqua del rubinetto. Numero 10. Ecco anche questo è un aspetto importante e che potrebbe esserti utile. Ordinare l'acqua del rubinetto. Non è comune in Italia chiedere un bicchiere d'acqua del rubinetto o ordinare una caraffa di acqua del rubinetto. Non lo facciamo, anche se sempre più spesso nei ristoranti vengono servite delle caraffe con dell'acqua filtrata da una macchina apposta. Ma non è un'usanza chiedere l'acqua del rubinetto, mentre lo è in altri paesi.

10. Ordering tap water. Number 10. This is also an important aspect that might be useful to you. Ordering tap water. It's not common in Italy to ask for a glass of tap water or to order a carafe of tap water. We don't do it, even though more and more often in restaurants they serve carafes with water filtered by a special machine. But it's not customary to ask for tap water, whereas it is in other countries.

È proprio una questione di usanza più che di paura di batteri o una questione igienica. Io ricordo che da bambino andavo spesso a giocare in un centro anziani vicino a casa mia. Sì, io da bambino andavo al centro anziani. E ricordo che mi vergognavo tantissimo di chiedere un bicchiere d'acqua al bar e molto spesso il barista si è rifiutato di darmelo.

It's really a matter of custom more than fear of bacteria or a hygiene issue. I remember that as a child I often went to play at a senior center near my house. Yes, as a child I went to the senior center. And I remember that I was very embarrassed to ask for a glass of water at the bar and very often the bartender refused to give it to me.

E effettivamente molti baristi o proprietari di bar non amano offrire acqua del rubinetto gratuitamente, perché in Italia il prezzo del caffè è già molto basso. Perché generalmente puoi comprare un caffè a 1,20 euro, 1,30 euro, 1,50 euro fuori dalle zone super turistiche. E se a questo aggiungiamo l'uso del tovagliolino di carta per pulirsi la bocca e magari l'uso del bagno, ecco che il margine per il bar è veramente basso. Ma è comunque una questione di usanza, oltre che economica.

And in fact many bartenders or bar owners don't like to offer tap water for free, because in Italy the price of coffee is already very low. Because generally you can buy a coffee for 1.20 euros, 1.30 euros, 1.50 euros outside of super-touristy areas. And if we add to this the use of a paper napkin to wipe your mouth and maybe the use of the bathroom, the margin for the bar is really low. But it's still a matter of custom, as well as economics.

C'è anche da dire che gli italiani sono dei grandi consumatori di acqua in bottiglia a casa. Nella maggior parte delle case gli italiani hanno bottiglie di plastica, purtroppo, o di vetro e bevono l'acqua dalla bottiglia, anche se io personalmente bevo molto l'acqua del rubinetto. E data questa abitudine degli italiani, andare in un ristorante e trovarsi una caraffa di acqua del rubinetto potrebbe essere una caduta di stile, ecco. Ma a parte questo è veramente un'usanza che ancora non abbiamo.

It should also be said that Italians are big consumers of bottled water at home. In most homes, Italians have plastic bottles, unfortunately, or glass bottles and they drink water from the bottle, even though I personally drink a lot of tap water. And given this habit of Italians, going to a restaurant and finding a carafe of tap water could be seen as a faux pas. But apart from this, it's really a custom we still don't have.
