An American in Shanghai

Exploring language learning and technology, focused on the learner experience.

About Me

I'm a linguist, educator, and entrepreneur based in Shanghai, China. Originally from Tampa, Florida, I earned my bachelor's degree in Japanese from the University of Florida before pivoting to Chinese language studies in my twenties. My master's in applied linguistics from East China Normal University was completed entirely in Chinese, a challenge that deepened my understanding of what it takes to master a foreign language.

In 2002, I founded Sinosplice, which evolved into a platform for exploring Chinese language and culture from a learner's perspective. This led to founding AllSet Learning, a consultancy focused on personalized Chinese instruction that blends human interaction with smart use of technology.

Over the years, I've been involved in several major Chinese learning projects: I was the academic director and main host for over 3,000 lessons at ChinesePod (2006-2013), developed the Chinese Grammar Wiki, co-founded Mandarin Companion graded readers with Jared Turner, and also co-host the You Can Learn Chinese podcast.

Since 2022, I've been teaching at Shanghai Qibao Dwight High School, where I teach IB English B and Theory of Knowledge. I'm also actively involved in EdTech initiatives, particularly exploring how AI can enhance language learning and education more broadly.

My work is driven by a healthy skepticism of traditional approaches in language teaching, especially approaches that overlook the learner's actual experience. Whether through content creation, teaching, or technology, I'm passionate about making language learning more effective and more human.
